佐賀県鹿島市で毎年初夏に開催される「ガタリンピック」は、道の駅鹿島に隣接する有明海の干潟を舞台に、干潟ならではのユニークな競技が繰り広げられるイベントです。今年は6月8日（日）に第41回大会が開催され、多くの参加者でにぎわいました

　本学ダイバーシティセンターでは、中国出身の劉コーディネーターの引率のもと、多文化コースのミャンマー出身留学生6名（2年生5名、1年生1名）の計7名が、ガタリンピックにあわせて実施されたホームステイプログラムに参加しました。

　競技の前夜、学生たちは地元の日本人家庭に宿泊し、ホストファミリーの子どもたちと交流したり、一緒に遊んだり、料理を作ったりと、家庭的な雰囲気の中で楽しい時間を過ごしました。また、祐徳稲荷神社や肥前浜宿通りを案内していただき、日本酒の酒蔵見学も体験しました。子どもたちとのふれあいや、日本の伝統文化に触れる貴重な機会となり、参加者全員が初めての体験に大いに感動していました。

　学生たちからは「とても楽しかったです！参加してよかったです！」という声も多く寄せられ、非常に充実した体験となりました。

　The "Gatalympics," held annually in early summer in Kashima City, Saga Prefecture, is a unique event featuring mudflat-based competitions that take place on the tidal flats of the Ariake Sea, adjacent to the Roadside Station Kashima. This year, the 41st tournament was held on Sunday, June 8, and the event was bustling with many enthusiastic participants.

　Under the guidance of Ms. Liu, a coordinator originally from China, the Diversity Center of our university organized participation in a homestay program held in conjunction with the Gatalympics. A total of seven participants—six international students from Myanmar enrolled in the Multicultural Studies Course (five second-year students and one first-year student)—took part in this enriching experience.

　On the evening before the competition, the students stayed with local Japanese host families, spending quality time in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. They interacted with the host families’ children, played together, and cooked meals, enjoying a truly homely experience. The students were also guided to visit Yūtoku Inari Shrine and Hizen Hamashuku Street, where they had the opportunity to tour a sake brewery. The interactions with local children and the exposure to traditional Japanese culture proved to be a valuable and memorable experience, deeply moving all the participants.

　Many students shared enthusiastic feedback, saying things like, “It was so much fun! I’m really glad I participated!” The event turned out to be an extremely fulfilling and meaningful experience for everyone involved.

TOETOEMOE OOKYAINGさん（2年生）
　第41回ガタリンピックに参加して、すごく楽しい思い出ができました！友達と一緒にバスで鹿島に向かい、ホームステイ先のご家族が迎えに来てくれました。

　ホームステイでは、一緒に夕ご飯を作って日本の家庭料理を体験できました。とっても美味しかったです！夜には息子さんがデザートを作ってくださって、すごく嬉しかったし感動しました。朝ご飯も一緒に作って、なんとプレゼントまでいただきました！

　朝9時ごろからガタリンピックがスタート！私は「ガタチャリ」に参加しました。全身泥まみれになりながら楽しめて、外国から来た他の友達もできて、本当にいい経験になりました

　Participating in the 41st Gatalympics gave me such wonderful memories! I headed to Kashima by bus with my friends, and our host family came to pick us up.

　During the homestay, we cooked dinner together and got to experience authentic Japanese home cooking. It was really delicious! That night, their son made us dessert, which made me so happy and touched. We also made breakfast together the next morning, and to my surprise, they even gave me a gift!

　The Gatalympics started around 9a.m. I took part in the “Gatachari” race. I got completely covered in mud but had so much fun, and I even made new friends from other countries. It was truly a great experience.

　初めて参加した鹿島市のガタリンピックは、私にとってとても楽しく、思い出深い体験になりました。最初は泥の中での競技に少し戸惑いましたが、参加者全員が笑顔で楽しんでいて、すぐに私も夢中になりました。特に私が参加したザーガタリンピック競技では、実際に泥の中に入った時、前に全然進まなくて動けなかったんです。全身泥まみれになりながらも　笑いの絶えない時間を過ごしました。また、ボランティアとして来てくれる高校生たちとも仲間になって、新しい友達もできました。
　ホームステイ初日には、家族が肥前浜宿通りに連れて行ってくれて、日本酒の酒蔵を見学することができました。日本酒の試飲もさせていただき、酒造りの工程や歴史について学ぶことができ、とても興味深かったです。その後、夕方にはホストファミリーと一緒にバーベキューをしながら、地元の料理や文化に触れる楽しいひとときを過ごしました。ホームステイでは、温かく迎えてくださったご家庭のおかげで、不安なく過ごすことができました。夜に子供と一緒に遊んでとても貴重な時間でした。
　地元の方々の温かさに触れ、自然や文化を体感できた今回の経験は、私にとって忘れられない思い出となりました。このような貴重な機会をいただき、心から感謝しています

　My first time participating in the Gatalympics in Kashima City was a very fun and memorable experience for me. At first, I was a little hesitant about competing in the mud, but seeing everyone enjoying themselves with big smiles quickly made me get hooked. Especially in the “Zā Gatalympics” event I joined, when I actually stepped into the mud, I couldn’t move forward at all. Even though I was covered head to toe in mud, we had a time full of laughter.

　I also became friends with high school students who volunteered at the event, which was a great opportunity to make new friends.

　On the first day of the homestay, my host family took me to Hizen Hamashuku Street, where I had the chance to visit a sake brewery. I was able to taste some sake and learn about the brewing process and history, which was very interesting. Later in the evening, I enjoyed a barbecue with my host family, experiencing local food and culture in a warm and friendly atmosphere. Thanks to the kindness of my host family, I was able to spend the homestay without any worries. Playing with the children at night was also a very precious time.

　This experience, where I was able to feel the warmth of the local people and immerse myself in nature and culture, has become an unforgettable memory for me. I am truly grateful for this valuable opportunity.

　普段は「泥で汚れないように！」と言われるけれど、この日は思いきり泥の中で遊べる、最高に楽しい一日でした。
　スタートの合図で走り出したけれど、足が泥にハマってうまく走れず、転んだり滑ったりして顔も服も泥だらけに。でも、それがとても楽しかったです。泥の中で転んで笑い合い、チームで力を合わせてがんばり、最後は泥まみれの顔で写真を撮りました。どれも忘れられない思い出です。応援の声や笑い声があふれ、知らない人とも自然に笑い合い、みんな友だちのような気持ちになりました。
　笑って、転んで、泥だらけになり、人とつながれる。心があたたかくなる、世界にひとつだけのイベントです

　Usually, I’m told, “Don’t get dirty with mud!” but on this day, I got to play freely in the mud—it was an incredibly fun day.

　When the starting signal was given, I took off running, but my feet got stuck in the mud, and I couldn’t run well. I fell and slipped, and my face and clothes were covered in mud. But that was so much fun.We fell and laughed together in the mud, worked hard as a team, and at the end, we took photos with mud-covered faces. All of these are unforgettable memories. The cheers and laughter filled the air, and even with strangers, we naturally laughed together and felt like friends.

　Laughing, falling, getting covered in mud, and connecting with others — it’s a one-of-a-kind event that warms the heart.

​THEINMWAE THWEさん（2年生）
　鹿島でのホームステイは、とても楽しくて忘れられない経験になりました。親切なご家族と一緒にお過ごし、元気いっぱいの5人の子どもたちとたくさん遊びました。日本でも有名な祐徳稲荷神社にも連れて行っていただきました。子どもたちの笑顔とエネルギーに元気をもらい、とても温かく迎えてくれたことが嬉しかったです。ホストの方々もとても優しくて親しみやすかったです。日本語を使う良い機会になり、日本の生活についてもたくさん学ぶことができました。
　また、ガタリンピックのイベントは非常にユニークでワクワクする体験でした。いろいろな国の人たちと話すことができ、一緒に笑ったり、泥だらけになったり、応援し合ったりして楽しい時間を過ごしました。他の文化を持つ人たちとつながる素晴らしい機会となり、日本文化についてさらに深く知ることができました。
　この経験を通して、いろんな国の新しい友だちもできました

　My homestay in Kashima was a very enjoyable and unforgettable experience. I spent time with a kind family and played a lot with their five energetic children. They also took me to Yūtoku Inari Shrine, which is famous throughout Japan. I was uplifted by the children’s smiles and energy, and I felt very happy to be warmly welcomed. The hosts were also very kind and friendly. It was a great opportunity to use Japanese and learn a lot about daily life in Japan.

　The Gatalympics event was a unique and exciting experience. I was able to talk with people from various countries, laugh together, get covered in mud, and cheer each other on—it was a lot of fun. It was a wonderful opportunity to connect with people from different cultures and deepen my understanding of Japanese culture.

　Through this experience, I also made new friends from many countries

　今回、初めてガタリンピックに参加し、日本での初ホームステイも体験しました。短い滞在でしたが、ホストファミリーはとても親切で、安心して過ごせました。
　ガタリンピックでは、地域の方々や海外からの参加者と交流でき、競技を通して楽しい時間を共有できました。泥の中で走ったりバランスを取ったりするユニークな競技に挑戦し、みんなで笑い合ったことが特に印象に残っています。
　この経験を通して、人とのつながりの大切さを実感し、これからもさまざまなイベントに参加して、自分の世界を広げていきたいと思いました

　This time, I participated in the Gatalympics for the first time and also experienced my first homestay in Japan. Although my stay was short, my host family was very kind, and I felt comfortable and safe.

　At the Gatalympics, I had the opportunity to interact with local people and participants from overseas, sharing enjoyable moments through the competitions. I especially remember trying unique events that involved running and balancing in the mud, and laughing together with everyone.

　Through this experience, I realized the importance of connecting with others, and I want to continue participating in various events to broaden my own world.

　今回は友達と一緒に第41回ガタリンピックに参加して、本当に最高に楽しかったです！当日、ホームステイ先のご家族が日本で有名な祐徳神社に連れて行ってくださり、1年生の私とっては初めての神社参拝でドキドキしながらもワクワクしました。
　ホームステイ先の夜は、やさしいご夫婦と楽しく食事をしながらたくさん話し、生活の基本も丁寧に教えていただいて、温かい時間を過ごせました。帰る時にはプレゼントまでいただき、とても感動しました。友達と先生方々及びホームステイのご夫婦のおかげで、日本での素敵な思い出ができて感謝しています。

　This time, I participated in the 41st Gatalympics together with my friends, and it was truly the most fun experience ever! On the day of the event, my host family kindly took me to Yūtoku Shrine, which is famous in Japan. As a first-year student, it was my first time visiting a shrine, and I felt both nervous and excited.

　During the homestay, I enjoyed warm and pleasant meals with the kind host couple, talked a lot, and they carefully taught me the basics of daily life. It was a heartwarming time. When it was time to leave, they even gave me a gift, which moved me deeply. Thanks to my friends, the teachers, and the host couple, I was able to create wonderful memories in Japan.

　ガタリンピックは、本当に楽しくて特別なイベントです！日本や世界の友達と出会い、みんなガタリンピックは、本当に楽しくてで笑って、泥だらけになりながら楽しめる最高の思い出になります。

　ホームステイでは、日本の家族と一緒に過ごすことで、日本の文化や生活を身近に感じることができます。言葉に自信がなくても、笑顔と気持ちでしっかり伝わるので心配いりません。

　最初は少し不安かもしれませんが、思いきって参加してみてください。きっと「参加してよかった！」と思える素晴らしい体験になりますよ！チャンスがあれば、ぜひ参加してみてください😊

　The Gatalympics is truly a fun and special event! You get to meet friends from Japan and around the world, laugh together, and enjoy yourself covered head to toe in mud—creating unforgettable memories.

　During the homestay, spending time with a Japanese family lets you experience Japanese culture and daily life up close. Even if you’re not confident with the language, don’t worry—your smile and feelings will surely get your message across.

　At first, you might feel a little nervous, but I encourage you to take the plunge and join in. 　It will definitely be a wonderful experience that makes you say, “I’m so glad I participated!” If you get the chance, please give it a try 😊
